Why Regular Leak Inspections Are So Important

As homeowners, we sometimes take our plumbing systems for granted. Oftentimes, we don’t check up on our plumbing, pipes, or appliances until something goes wrong—and by then, there can be serious leak damage! Not only are leaks frustrating, but they can also cause damage to your home and pool if not treated soon enough. Plus, leaks that build up over time can get expensive, costing you hundreds of extra dollars in water bills and repairs. That’s why it’s so important to conduct regular leak inspections around the house. The sooner you find a leak (or a damaged area that may cause a leak), the sooner you can address the problem.

Save Money with Regular Leak Detection

Here are just a few reasons why regular leak detection is important for the safety and functionality of your home.

Spot Leaks Fast

We often like to say that the best way to stop leaks is to prevent them from happening in the first place! And one of the best preventative measures against leaks is to regularly check your plumbing. The more often you check your plumbing and appliances, the more likely you are to spot damage and the early stages of leaks. As soon as you find a leak, be sure to call a professional leak detection company right away!

Save Money

If you’ve ever had a home or pool leak before, you know how expensive they can be to fix. Not only that, but the longer leaks go unnoticed, the higher your water bills will get over time. No one wants to pay for water that they aren’t using! And believe it or not, hiring a professional leak detection company will also help you save money in the long run because they’ll get the job done right the first time.

Save Stress

There’s no doubt that leaks are stressful. Many leaks are hard to spot and can build up over time, leaving you to wonder where the leak started in the first place. Active leaks are incredibly stressful, especially if you aren’t able to contact anyone to help. By checking your appliances frequently, you can see signs of damage that may lead to leaks, saving you stress in the long run.

Minimize Damage

Leaks that go unchecked can cause serious damage to your home and appliances. Not only are burst pipes dangerous, but standing water can cause stains on ceilings, walls, and floors. These repairs are very expensive to make, so it’s best to spot and fix leaks as soon as possible.

Health and Safety

Leaks can put families in dangerous situations. Active leaks can damage your home’s ceilings, walls, and floors, making your home a potentially dangerous place. Additionally, moisture and standing water can cause mold and mildew to grow, which are both dangerous for people’s health—especially those with asthma and allergies. The sooner you can stop a leak, the safer you and your family will be!

Places to Check for Leaks

Now that you know why regular leak inspections are so important, let’s talk about some of the areas to check around your home and pool. Check these areas thoroughly, and if you spot any signs of leaks or damage, contact a leak detection specialist right away!

Areas to Check Around Your Home

  • Toilets. Toilets are one of the most frequently used appliances around the house. As such, they can be frequently subject to leaks. Listen for hissing noises in the pipes behind the toilet, which can indicate a leak. If your toilet bowl doesn’t fill properly, this may also be a sign of a leak.

  • Faucets and sinks. As faucets and sinks get older, it’s not uncommon for them to experience leaks. Thankfully, these leaks are easy to spot. Does your faucet or showerhead continue dripping even after you’ve turned the water off? If so, you have a leak! Sometimes these leaks can be solved by simply replacing the faucet or showerhead. But if that doesn’t work, you may have a more complicated leak on your hands.

  • Pipes under the sink. Thankfully, leaks under the sink are pretty easy to spot. If you see the pipes actively dripping, or you see standing water under the pipes, this is a surefire sign of a leak.

  • Large household appliances. Check behind large appliances like the laundry machine, dishwasher, and refrigerator. These appliances often get neglected until something goes wrong, so make sure to take a proactive approach to check them. Make sure their pipes and connections are all functioning properly, and if anything looks off, try to repair it right away.

  • Plumbing systems. Household plumbing can span all throughout the house in complicated systems. Although it’s difficult to check these systems without the right equipment, you can still listen for telltale signs of leaks. Listen for hissing, popping, or other strange noises, all of which may indicate a leak.

Areas to Check Around Your Pool

If you own a pool, you likely know how much work goes into maintaining them. Although they are fun to use during the summer months, they definitely need regular maintenance—and part of that is checking for leaks in several areas. Just like leaks around your home, pool leaks can add significantly to your water bill and even damage your backyard.

Here are some of the areas to check for pool leaks.

  • Pool pump. The pool pump is one of the most important parts of your pool because it is responsible for circulating all the water through the system. It’s important that the pump is working properly. Check that none of the pump’s pipes are leaking. One of the most obvious signs of a leak in the pump is if you see standing water underneath it.

  • Pool lights. Believe it or not, your pool lights can leak too! Oftentimes, these leaks spring up through cracks in the pool lights, so be sure to check for damage on these lights.

  • Pool surface and tiles. Look carefully at your pool’s surface flagstone (the concrete surrounding the pool) and the tiles in the pool itself. Aging pools may start to form cracks in the tile. Most of the smaller cracks are just cosmetic in nature and don’t pose a serious threat to your pool. However, you should be sure to patch them up anyway so you can avoid the risk of a leak later on.

  • Around the backyard. Whether you have an above-ground or underground pool, make sure to check around your backyard for wet spots. Wet, soggy ground may indicate you have a leak somewhere in the pool system. The longer these wet spots stay soggy, the more you risk compromising the stability of your landscaping.
